The Power of PR
What exactly is PR?
Why does PR matter?
How can you use PR to connect to your community?
What’s the difference between PR and publicity?
Well, let me outline it for you...
A prospective client recently came to me to find out if we could promote an upcoming series of events.
Branding and messaging were already done and they just wanted to see their name in lights. In the PR world, we call that earned media: getting as much press coverage as possible without paying for it.
That’s publicity in a nutshell.
It does require strategy, but the strategy is narrowly focused on pitch development and reaching out to reporters and media outlets to make sure pitches are connecting with the right folks.
Think of publicity as press releases, advisories, e-mails and phone calls. There’s a pretty well defined process, and we engage in that process to get results for our clients.
Public relations adds a layer of ART to the process,
PR backs the process up one step to consider the message itself: What’s being done, why is it being done and how does it affect a target audience?
Public relations is figuring out how to relate your service , event , product or cause to the public.
In fact, at the core, public relations is all about strategy – about planning, messaging, and thinking about your audience and goals. It's about strategy pertaining to managing your image and reputation.
What you say about your company, products, or services
What your employees say about your company, products, or services.
What your customers/prospective customers say
How all of these people perceive or feel about your company, product, or services.
Let’s take this one step further. Depending on the needs or goals of your company, PR plays other important roles.
It can help generate publicity, shape opinion, build awareness, educate audiences, drive sales, build relationships, and build your brand.
